Description:

Rembrandt School.
Jewish Pawnbroker
oil on canvas
h:84 w: 109 cm.

Other Notes: Extraordinary painting depicting a Jewish Pawnbroker holding his pledged goods, which was a "permitted trade" for Jews in that period. Rembrandt's sympathetic portrayal and facial expressions of Jews were legendary and compelling in their detail. Rembrandt encouraged his students to show individualism and expressiveness in their work and they expanded on his study of character genre which often focused on a face and expression.
