Description:

Francoise Gilot
b.1921 (French)
Contrasts, 1945
graphite on paper
h:8 w: 9 cm.
signed and dated to lower right '1945 F. Gilot'

Provenance: Acquired directly from the artist by the present owner, Private Collection, California.

Other Notes: This graphite on paper drawing, a study for an unrealized painting, was created during Gilot's brief association with a group of artists, including Nicolas de Stael, Sonia Delaunay and Brancusi, who had formed a new movement in Paris called "Realities Nouvelles" (New Realities) dedicated to the idea of "pure painting" without reference to external reality. The year 1945 was Gilot's first period of abstraction, contributing to her visibility and trajectory as an artist in post-war Paris.

This work is registered in the F. Gilot Archives as number G.495.
